22-6mm AI EXPERIANCE

Postby Triple 6 on Wed Jan 09, 2008 7:16 am

Has anyone had any experiance with this cartridge that was in the Jan issue of American Rifleman? Got a guy wanting one built, just wondering if it was everything they claim in the articial. Personially I don't like non-standard rounds just because of the hastle of fireforming etc. Any pointers would be appreciated. :?

22-6mm AI

Postby dirtball on Mon Feb 04, 2008 7:10 pm

I picked on up in December from a guy on Gunbroker that said it was to much trubble to load for. The guy that did this one decided the the reg 6mm neck was to long so he moved the shoulder forward, he had Dave at PT&G make the reamer so this is a "one of a kind chamber". Neck length is the same a 22-250 AI. It is built on a 40X single shot action and has a 30" pac-nor barrel plus a vias style brake and a 1-8 twist, it is a tightneck .248. So turning and fireforming are definatly required. Still working on loads, best one so far is 58gr RS Magnum with a 75gr A-Max. 3845 fps (ave of 8 shots, 75 fps E.S.) best three shot group .32. I am using a set of 22-250 AI redding S type dies to do the top of the case, and when the base gets snug I plan the use a 240 Gibbs FL die that I have. Only time will tell weather I will need to have a set of custom dies made. So far with necks turned to .0115 I end up with loaded case neck dia of bet .246 and .2465. the bounce I get from firing resets the neck dia to about .245 so I am just cleaning the primer pockets, brushing the inside of the case necks and reloading them. I figure when I can get a bullet to slide in the case mouth after firing it will be time to anneal them.
I love a challenge so this has been a lot of fun for me, and perhaps 600 to 800 yard groundhogs may be possible. Included two pics, rifle with new stock and scope, and one of the 22-6mm A.I. Short Neck and a reg 6mm/244 case.
Good Luck
Dave :D ImageImage
