Why the hate?

Postby Texas_Rick on Fri Jan 04, 2008 9:49 pm

I've noticed that a lot of folks talk down the Savage rifles. I happen to have two that are exceptional shooters right out of the box and very little work needed to improve them.I recently completed a Level II precision rifle class and the class top shooter was shooting................A Savage?
So, why the hate for the Savage????

I also have two Savages. Both of them are 10FP Tacticals one in 223 and the other a 308. I here the same things sometimes about the Savages. To each his own.

It's all about the stocks

Postby Lowlight on Sun Jan 06, 2008 4:41 pm

I think 75% of the hate funneled at Savage is because of the stocks, another 15% at aesthetics, with the last 10% coming in for various reasons based on very old past experiences with the rifles.

They have improved greatly over the years, however once they changed to the Accu-trigger and with that changing the receiver design, it didn't win them any friends.

As far as "who" was a high shooter with it, that is a irrelevant as a good shooter is a good shooter, doesn't have to do with the rifle as much as the man. Just because he was using a Savage wouldn't have me run out and buy one.

But they can be just as consistent a rifle as any standard Remington, however old prejudices are hard to overcome.

+1 Frank. The very first Savage I owned was a 110FP in 308. This was there first Tactical rifle. This was also before they made any good aftermarket stuff ie, stocks, triggers, etc. The stock was not very good, and the trigger sucked. I had problems with it and I sold it.

As for the rifles they make now, they are alot better. I am not sure if I would get one with the accutrigger, but I would get one of the other aftermarket triggers and install in. The 10FP Tactical in 308 that I have has a McMillian stock and a Basix trigger. It is a good shooting rifle. 8)

I agree with what has been said, I have had 2 Savages 110FP's. One in 30-06 and the other in .223. The stocks were too light for the guns and in fact I did an article on just this subject. I restocked the 30-06 in an A2 knock off and modified the stock on the .223. Both guns were/are very accurate. I have a great many other rifles and to be honest dollar for dollar the Savages will get the job done.

I don't mind Savages. I'm even considering building an F/TR rifle from a Savage.

Savages of old are not Savages of new. The new ones are as good as any other rifle in price class.

They have a F TR Rifle that is fantastic from box. The sniper packages are damm nice also

I see a savage at every F-Class match I shoot at my home range. Chambered in .260, the rifle is a true shooter, the guy behind it does not hurt much either. The new F-Class action is supposed to be excellent.

Because people are paying mega bucks for rifles that some of them can't shoot and getting the pants beat off of them by shooters that pay minimal bucks for a Savage.

For years I've been saying that the Savage is the best bang for your buck. They just plain shoot out of the box.

My Dad had an expression that I use and that's "Cheap and nasty", meaning that they are inexpensive and get the job done.

If I were in the market for another .223 or .308, I'd seriously consider a Savage.
